The federal EPA has granted the state of Oregon $12 million to clean 25 acres of highly contaminated sediments on the Willamette River near the University of Portland, according to The Oregonian. The site had been denied funding in July, but Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski appealed to President Bush during the president's August visit to Oregon, aiding in the release of funds. The site hosted the now-bankrupt McCormick & Baxter Creosote Co. from 1944 to 1991. The company treated wood with preservatives containing creosote, pentachlorophenol and metals.
