The Spartanburg, S.C. County Council has voted against issuing a permit for Waste Management to construct a new landfill. The company had offered free disposal and host fees totaling $60 million, but according to WYFF-4 News, did not disclose the exact location of the planned landfill. The company said the 200-acre site would only affect six rural residences, but commissioners said they were uncomfortable permitting a landfill whose site was unknown. Spartanburg's current Wellford Landfill still has 30 to 50 years of space remaining if it is expanded.
