EC Begins Inquiry Into German Recycling Operations

The European Commission has begun a legal inquiry into Germany's controversial can-recycling system. The Commission has expressed concern that Germany's system of deposit requirements on non-reusable packages, such as beverage cans, is too complex and discriminatory against foreign importers. Startech Environmental Corporation has successfully completed a $70,000 contract from Concurrent Technologies Corporation to demonstrate the ability of Startech's Plasma Converter to safely process and destroy e-waste. Bechtel Jacobs Wins Cleanup Contract at Oak Ridge

Bechtel Jacobs Company has received a new accelerated environmental cleanup contract from the U.S. Department of Energy for work at various sites in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The value of this 5-year, cost-plus-incentive-fee contract is estimated at $1.8 billion. EPA Will Not Regulate Dioxins in Sewage Sludge

The Environmental Protection Agency has declared that it will not regulate dioxins in sewage sludge applied as fertilizer to U.S. crops, since the use of the sludge does not harm humans or the environment. After studying the issue for five years, the EPA said in a statement it determined "that dioxins from this source do not pose a significant risk to human health or the environment." Spartanburg, S.C. Votes Down Waste Management Landfill

The Spartanburg, S.C. County Council has voted against issuing a permit for Waste Management to construct a new landfill. The company had offered free disposal and host fees totaling $60 million, but according to WYFF-4 News, did not disclose the exact location of the planned landfill. The company said the 200-acre site would only affect six rural residences, but commissioners said they were uncomfortable permitting a landfill whose site was unknown. Indiana Warns Munster About Financial Requirements

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has warned Munster officials that they have not yet proven there is sufficient financial stability to ensure the proper post-closure care of the town's landfill, scheduled to close next spring.
