Rocky Mountain Steel Mills, a division of Oregon Steel Mills, Inc., (NYSE: OS), recently negotiated a comprehensive settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to resolve all air emission compliance issues arising over the last two decades under the New Source Performance Standards and the Prevention of Significant Determination programs. Under the settlement, RMSM will maintain its production levels while dramatically reducing the facility's emissions and improving its energy efficiency. Under the agreement, RMSM will voluntarily shut down one of its steel making furnaces in order to invest approximately $25 million in a single state-of-the-art furnace/emission control operation and improved reheat furnaces. In addition, as part of the settlement agreement, RMSM has agreed to spend $450,000 to fund community-based environmental enhancement and educational projects in Pueblo, Colo.
