Alabama Commissioners Seek Reduction In Landfill Power

Date: April 10, 2003

Source: News Room

Alabama county commissions are encouraging the state Legislature to take away some of their power, as they do not want to be allowed to cancel a landfill once they've approved it. The reason is that residents apparently pressure county commissioners to change their minds, and the backlash can cost commissioners at election time. Among several provisions of the regulatory reform bill is one that says once a county commission or city council has approved a landfill, the approval will remain valid unless the developer drops the landfill plans or the Alabama Department of Environmental Management does not approve the project. Landfill opponents are fighting the proposal.
